ASSISTANT DIRECTOR: SCM RISK AND PERFORMANCE JOB

Assistant Director: SCM Risk and Performance (Pretoria)

The National Treasury is looking for an Assistant Director to join the Office of the Director-General in Pretoria. The role focuses on contract management, supply chain performance, and keeping the department’s travel arrangements running smoothly. The reference number is S020/2025, and the salary ranges from R468,459 to R551,823 a year, not including benefits.

Who can apply

You’ll need a Grade 12 certificate plus a National Diploma (at least NQF level 6) or a Bachelor’s degree (NQF level 7) in Travel, Tourism, Supply Chain Management, or Business Management. Employers also want at least three years of hands-on experience in logistics, supply chain, contract management, travel, transportation, or hotel bookings. A good understanding of the Public Service framework for travel coordination and supply chain management is expected, along with solid skills in policy analysis and research, and familiarity with the practice notes and directives that govern government travel.

What the job involves

Day to day, you’ll be the person who keeps travel running properly. That means talking to service providers, confirming bookings, working with travel bookers, and making sure each division’s travel needs stay in line with its budget. You’ll advise colleagues on anything travel-related that affects their spending, check payments against the rates agreed in contracts, negotiate better deals with suppliers, and make sure providers meet the standards of the travel and accommodation industry.

You’ll also keep an eye on anything that strays from the plan, whether it’s flights, accommodation, car hire, or venue and conference bookings. If the department loses money through cancellations or negligence, you’ll report it. You’ll break down spending by category, and give management clear feedback on savings, exceptions, and deviations.

Part of the role is making sure people follow the rules. You’ll help shape and update the travel policy, check which vehicles may be hired, confirm that trip authorisation forms are valid before anyone travels or changes their plans, and oversee how road travel credit cards are issued to service providers.

Supplier performance is another big piece. Each quarter you’ll review how contracted providers are doing, including site visits, compare them against industry standards, and recommend fixes where improvement is needed.

On the contract side, you’ll write and refine the department’s contract management policies, work with Legal Services on drafting agreements, and liaise with stakeholders until contracts are finalised and approved. You’ll track performance, ensure compliance, deal with changes or problems as they come up, and provide regular weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports on contract administration.

Finally, you’ll look for risk across supply chain operations and recommend corrective steps. This includes watching contract extensions, variations, and expansions, and reporting irregular, wasteful, or unauthorised expenditure to the right authorities. Each quarter you’ll also deliver a review of supply chain performance together with action plans.

A few things to check before you publish. The application link in your text looks cut off at the end, so please confirm the full address. The advert also doesn’t include a closing date, which readers will want. And since this is a public job notice, I’d suggest adding a short line on your site about how you source your listings, plus a link to the official advert, which helps with trust and with approval.
